Shira Gate to Shira Plateau
The hike starts at the Shira Gate, situated at an elevation of 11,800 feet (3,600 meters) above sea level. The Shira gate is just 200m away from Shira 1 camp. From here, you’ll hike through pristine montane forest, and as you ascend, you’ll notice a change in the vegetation. The trail takes you to the Shira Plateau, a high-altitude desert with its unique flora. This is a relatively gentle hike, and you’ll enjoy awe-inspiring panoramic views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape.
After a few hours of hiking, you’ll reach a scenic spot on the plateau where you can have a well-deserved lunch. Your guides will provide a delicious meal while you rest and take in the incredible scenery. This break also allows you to acclimatize to the altitude before continuing the hike.
Following lunch, you’ll continue your ascent toward the Shira Cathedral. The landscape here is characterized by imposing rock formations and alpine desert. The hike is challenging, but the reward is unmatched: the Shira Cathedral offers some of the most breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro, with its glaciers and jagged peaks.
After thoroughly exploring the Shira Cathedral and taking in the unparalleled beauty of Kilimanjaro, you’ll begin your descent back to the Shira Gate.
